A “Thinking L.A.” event, jointly sponsored by UCLA and Zocálo at the RAND Corporation Tuesday evening, explored the roots of the fervor surrounding fracking in California. Aradhna Tripati (department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences) and Edward Parson (UCLA School of Law and Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment) weigh in on the conversation.

UCLA’s Bird Genoscape Project to aid conservation efforts for North American birds threatened by climate change

Thomas Smith (department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) will help lead the Bird Genoscape Project, an initiative to create the first maps identifying the population-specific migration paths of several bird species and their sub-groups to determine where conservation is needed most to combat the effects of climate change. These findings will be directly relevant to the plans for the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge.
