Bruins and off-campus visitors tooled around north campus on Tuesday in Teslas and other electric vehicles during UCLA’s Drive an Electric Vehicle event, part of National Drive Electric Week.

UCLA Transportation has added 41 electric vehicles to its expanding fleet of eco-friendly vehicles on campus. The vehicles are sustainable and are aligned with the university’s commitment to sustainability as reflected by the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge.

Both Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, have been honored with 2014 Partner for Change awards by Practice Greenhealth, a nonprofit organization that works with the health care community to increase efficiency and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care through the use of best practices and new tools and knowledge.

The UCLA Sustainability Committee, including eighteen Sustainable LA faculty, was named Environmentalist of the Year by the nonprofit organization Faith2Green and Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz. The Sustainable LA Grand Challenge project was recognized for its contributions to UCLA’s high sustainability rating by the Princeton Review.

In the spirit of UCLA’s new Grand Challenge project, “Thriving in a Hotter Los Angeles,” researchers are teaming up with the Office of Sustainability to implement conservation solutions. Yoram Cohen, the director of the Water Technology Research Center as well of member of the Institute of Environment and Sustainability and assistant professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, has proposed the use of a groundbreaking water filtration system which could cut campus water use by 25.5 million gallons per year.
