Gaurav Sant (Henry Samueli Fellow Civil and Environmental Engineering, California NanoSystems Institute) completed research that indicates a path to carbon-neutral cement. This would have a direct impact on the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge because cement is responsible for 7% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.

Thomas Smith (department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) will help lead the Bird Genoscape Project, an initiative to create the first maps identifying the population-specific migration paths of several bird species and their sub-groups to determine where conservation is needed most to combat the effects of climate change.
