The UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge’s first competitive research grants will go to 11 projects, ranging from developing lightweight solar panels that double as batteries to studying the costs of algae-based biofuels.

Robert Wayne (department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) led one of the four projects that have received a Research Catalyst Award for research conducted that is relevant to the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge.

Research led by Dr. Peyman Golshani, (David Geffen School of Medicine) was awarded $2.3 million from the BRAIN Initiative to study how neural circuits in brains process, encode and retrieve information.
