L.A. County gets C+ from UCLA on environmental issues

Under the leadership of Mark Gold (Associate Vice Chancellor for Environment and Sustainability), Felicia Federico (Institute of the Environment and Sustainability) and Stephanie Pincetl (Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences) UCLA today issued the first comprehensive environmental report card for Los Angeles County. The county’s overall performance marks it as an unimpressive C+ student. This report card provides critical baseline information for the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge.

Electroconvulsive therapy changes key areas of the brain that play roles in memory and emotion

A new study by Katherine Narr (Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior) reveals that electrconvulsive therapy provides changes in certain areas of the brain that play a role in how people feel, learn and respond to environmental factors. This work may help the Depression Grand Challenge reach its goals of finding new and novel ways to treat depression.

How California could make better use of $28 billion in transportation spending

Ethan Elkind (UCLA School of Law and UC Berkeley School of Law) and Cara Horowitz (UCLA School of Law and Emmett Institute on the Environment and Sustainability) contributed to a study indicating how California could better coordinate transportation spending. Specifically, they advocate for improved maintenance of existing roads and improved public access to walking, biking and transit infrastructure.
