The UCLA Student Affairs office and UCLA Campus and Student Resilience are partnering with the Depression Grand Challenge to provide students with peer-to-peer counseling outside of a clinical setting. UCLA psychologists will train student volunteers in active listening and suicide prevention, among other skills.

Long-term effectiveness of family-level intervention for U.S.military children, families affected by wartime deployments

Research led by Dr. Patricia Lester (Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior) found that family-level preventive intervention can lead to improved behavioral health outcomes for military families affected by wartime deployment. The deployed parent, home-based parent and their children report results that highlight significant reductions in anxiety and depression symptoms after intervention.

Electroconvulsive therapy changes key areas of the brain that play roles in memory and emotion

A new study by Katherine Narr (Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior) reveals that electrconvulsive therapy provides changes in certain areas of the brain that play a role in how people feel, learn and respond to environmental factors. This work may help the Depression Grand Challenge reach its goals of finding new and novel ways to treat depression.
